OAP Program FAQs
Frequently asked questions about the Orthodontic Assistant Program
How do I become an OAP-certified assistant?
To become OAP-certified, you must complete an approved training program, pass both written and practical examinations, and work under the direct supervision of a licensed orthodontist in a registered practice.
What training programs are approved?
The CAO maintains a list of approved training programs including the CAO Certified Training Program, University of the Pacific, and other accredited institutions. Check our training materials section for the complete list.
How long does certification last?
OAP certification is valid for two years and requires completion of continuing education credits for renewal. Assistants must complete 10 hours of approved CE every two years.
Can assistants work in multiple practices?
Yes, OAP-certified assistants can work in multiple registered practices, but each practice must be individually registered in the OAP program and provide appropriate supervision.
What are the costs associated with the program?
Training program costs vary by institution. Practice registration fees are $200 annually, and individual assistant registration is $100 per assistant per year. Continuing education costs depend on the provider.
What happens if supervision requirements aren't met?
Failure to meet supervision requirements can result in suspension of OAP privileges, fines, or other disciplinary actions. The supervising orthodontist is ultimately responsible for ensuring compliance with all program requirements.
